“I read this in paperback. This is an unsolicited review.

I’ve been following poet Navin Manik for some time now on multiple social media platforms and for good reason. I often find myself nodding my head, ‘yeah, this guy is speaking my own heart’. Typically I am not a fan of rhyming or structured poetry, but there are a few writers out there who, I feel, do so without it feeling forced or trite. Navin is one such poet. Often it’s not that he pens this huge and powerful revelation, but instead writes through dark and light inner thoughts that I think a lot of us have. Insecurity. Treachery. Longing. Inner torment. The body’s betrayal. Dusk and dawn. Falling down. Looking to the skies above.

It’s a bit tough to choose a favorite from the stack, so I’ll share from the very first poem, the first one he ever wrote, as I understand it. “Speechless I Became” introduces us to this delightful collection with: ‘Speechless I became When I saw the glimpse of me Felt a sudden shift Paused were the thoughts Everything came to a halt Tears began to fall Soul wanted to scream Inner pain was so real Wounds wanted to heal I began to breathe…’ The introspection and subsequent personal revelation is so heartfelt and soul-rending, one has a growing sense of urgency to continue on, page after page.

The book was a great length at just about 120 pages. I like its simple cover and the description makes it feel approachable. I didn’t care for the formatting, however it may due to the nationality of origin (I am aware that different countries have different formatting and ‘rules’ for publishing). I have never purchased a book from this particular country before, so I have nothing to compare it to. But, to describe, the font was a bit large and margins a bit tight, causing it to feel almost crowded on the page. White space in a book is nearly as important as the printed word. But again, this is merely opinion and I don’t count it against the author personally. I did appreciate that I found no misspellings or odd punctuation issues, so that really helps me love this even more. I give this collection 4.25/5 stars and consider it recommended reading for those who enjoy modern metered/rhyming poetry that speaks straight to your heart.”

My poetry style:

I don’t follow any particular style…In fact, I don’t even know how many different styles exist…it doesn’t matter to me…coz poetry is about expressing in whichever manner one wants to…I simply line my rhyme when I eye the shine…that shine is the raw shine of the very moment…whatever it may offer…I listen to my heart…

I’m truly grateful to each & every one of you…for your wonderful support…for your unconditional love towards my poetry..I would only humbly ask you to buy my book if you connect with my rhymes…Lightning Rhymes…

I relate to not being able to name any poetry style and how you describe your process is another breathtaking poetic beauty!

  2. Congratulations Navin, on another beautiful and well-written review of your extraordinary book! I can say that, because I bought it too, and agree with Tara’s overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic review! I have the kindle version and I think the layout is very good on my iphone. I also agree with her, that your book is more of an experience than a read. It’s truly mesmerizing. I wish you great success, on your first book, “Lightning Rhymes”…You really deserve it!
